Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) and Children’s Parliament (MCPs) are today meeting with the First Minister and his Cabinet in the seventh annual Cabinet Meeting with Children and Young People, also known as the Cabinet Takeover.

MSYPs and MCPs have a crucial role to play in communicating the views of their generations to the most senior politicians in Scotland.

Cabinet Takeover is an opportunity for Scotland’s children and young people to have their rights realised as the Scottish Government listen to speeches from children and young people and act on the calls made by MSYPs and MCPs.

We want Scotland to be the best place for children to grow up. The Children’s Parliament and the Scottish Youth Parliament ensure our children and young people are empowered to confidently express their views and have a real influence on the issues that matter most to them.

Today’s Cabinet meeting is a great opportunity to further engage with our children and young people at a national level, ensuring they can have their say and be at the heart of decisions which affect them.

First Minister, Humza Yousaf MSP

We want to thank the First Minister and the Cabinet Ministers for the opportunity to speak to them today. Meaningful participation with children and young people is paramount at all levels of decision making. SYP looks forward to seeing progress on the issues raised today over the course of the next year and are willing to work with government to ensure children and young people’s voices are heard on the topics important to them.

– Mollie McGoran MSYP, Chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament

Today, the children and young people attending will call for action from the Scottish Government on the right to food, buffer zones, women’s health, climate change as well as bereavement support.

MSYPs will also be speaking about the need for action on youth work funding and progress on bringing back the UNCRC Scotland Bill back to Parliament as soon as possible.
