Independent Review of Qualifications and Assessment

Posted on

It’s Our Future – The Independent Review of Qualifications and Assessment Report, carried out by the Independent Review Group (IRG), was published in June 2023.

The IRG was led by Professor Hayward and brought together young people, teachers, parents, and academics to create recommendations for the Scottish Government to consider in their work to reform the Scottish Education system. Two MSYPs, Beinn Grant and Ruby Cardie, were members of the IRG and worked alongside a Collaborative Community Group (CCG) of young people to ensure a diverse range of views were included in discussions related to assessment and qualification.

SYP are very grateful to Professor Hayward for putting young people’s participation at the heart of this work and truly focusing on what is best for all learners when thinking of the future of Scottish education.

The Review recommends the adoption of a new approach to qualifications and assessment in Scotland. The Scottish Diploma of Achievement (SDA) which is comprised of three areas, Personal Pathway, Programmes of Learning and Project Learning.

Further detail about the Diploma can be found on the summary page and you can also access the full report on the Scottish Government website.

The Scottish Government will now deliver a variety of impact assessments which will be considered by the Cabinet Secretary before any decisions are taken regarding the SDA.
