Biography

MSYP for Clackmannanshire and Dunblane

he/him

Hello, I’m Ben! Outwith my role as an MSYP, I am a passionate volunteer in the health and social care sector, where I have spent hundreds of hours helping in children’s residential care as well as supporting the elderly in my local community.

Beyond volunteering, I am an avid long-distance runner and love reading books and writing for fun. I am also a massive Formula One and tennis fan, as well as an ‘avgeek’ and a history and politics enthusiast!

I wanted to become an MSYP because I saw that a large majority of ordinary young people were not engaging in youth voice or politics as a whole. Additionally, I noticed that their representatives were often out of touch and not very effective. Unfortunately, youth politics can sometimes be an echo chamber filled with similar opinions, I wanted to change that by running to represent my constituents – not my own biases or interests. I have done this by championing the voices of every single young person in my constituency.

My absolute favourite part of being an MSYP is working with young people in my area, whether that means getting them involved in youth voice or helping them bring their issues to decision-makers. Politicians should be about representing you and your community, not their own interests, and that is what I have strived to do – and will continue to do – for the rest of my term.

Three important issues I’m passionate about: Access to sporting Facilities, improving healthcare and mental health support for young people and improving educational standards for the most disadvantaged in our society.

Fun fact: I’m currently learning how to play the piano!
