Unlocking Article 12: Young People Champion Rights in Scotland

A group of MSYPs attended the Young Right Champions training to become ambassadors for The Right Way.

This month, a group of our Members took a big step forward in making sure young people’s voices are heard among decision-makers in Scotland.

After a full day of training, they’re now ready to roll out The Right Way – a project that focuses on putting Article 12 into practice by helping civil servants understand how to truly involve young people in shaping the policies and services that impact them.

These MSYPs are part of a new cohort of Young Right Campions who are passionate about making change happen. Reflecting on the training, Jeslin Konthuruthy, MSYP for Clackmannanshire and Dunblane, said:

“I found the day really inspiring. It showed me how I can make a difference, using real-life scenarios and learning to project young people’s rights.”

MSYPs last delivered The Right Way to the Scottish Parliament’s Senior Executive Team on Monday, 9 June 2025. Lorna Foreman, the organisation’s Director of People, Communications and Inclusion, said:

“I’m very grateful to the MSYPs and SYP colleagues who joined us at our recent meeting. We found The Right Way training to be a really high-quality and useful session. Many of our people are currently focused on preparing for next year’s election and the new Parliamentary session, and we’re committed to embedding the UNCRC into that planning. It will also form part of our renewed public engagement strategy for the new Parliamentary session.”

The Right Way started back in 2022 and is funded by the Scottish Government’s Children’s Rights Unit. Since then, MSYPs have helped develop training tools, roleplay exercises, FAQs, and real-world case studies to support professionals working with young people… and there’s more to come!

What’s more, the Young Right Champions have designed and delivered a bespoke upward mentoring programme to a core group of decision-makers to help them understand how they can reach out to young people more effectively.
